Rediscovering Pure Sleep

Sleep.
   Many of us are wrapped in busy-ness out of our necessities, and find that this basic human body need is bypassed. We feel tired, unrested, anxious, and can begin to feel weak and unprepared for Life. Sick. Even broken.

None of them really provide me with restful sleep over chemical stillness. This has made an almost immediate change for me, and I find it, in a word:    Astonishing.

“According to world-renowned sleep expert Dr. Russell G. Foster, if you are an average person 36 percent of your life will be spent sleeping. Based on time and direct influence on health, sleeping may be the single biggest component of overall well-being, yet of all healthy lifestyle behaviors, it has traditionally received the least attention. With modern research has come an increased understanding of what happens when we sleep and its importance, along with new methods of addressing this pervasive issue.

During our long period of rest, we cycle through four stages of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, followed by a single stage of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. During the NREM cycles, your body is hard at work restoring cells; building and rebuilding muscle tissue; working on organ, bone, and immune system health; and transferring information to the cerebral cortex to form new connections and memories. The ensuing REM stage focuses on mental restoration: sorting memory and creating space in the brain for the next wave of new connections. While the National Institutes of Health suggest the average adult sleeps less than 7 hours per night, 7.5–9 hours are required to fully go through the NREM-REM cycles and effectively restore your body and mind. Along with the accumulating daily fatigue, sleep deprivation negatively impacts the function of your immune system, inhibiting its ability to fight off infection. A lack of sleep puts your endocrine system on a roller coaster, negatively influencing vital signs such as heart rate, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels, increasing risk for countless health conditions. It can even increase hunger and decrease food satisfaction. Sleep has direct effects on the proper function of all your body systems and getting into a perpetual cycle of disturbed sleep has real health consequences.

A great sleep aid is found in the substance believed to be the seed of modern aromatherapy. Lavender is a highly researched essential oil. The majority of this scientific study involves its calming and relaxing properties when used topically and especially aromatically. Numerous studies, involving multiple participant groups, have shown that aromatherapy with Lavender essential oil as an addition to the bedtime routine can improve sleep duration and satisfaction while decreasing night waking and overall fatigue levels (2-5). A recent study found that developing a routine of inhaling Lavender prior to bedtime can even have a long-acting re-balancing effect on the sleep cycle (6). What is lesser known is the breadth of sleep-supporting properties imparted by Lavender essential oil when taken internally. Clinical and experimental research has shown that orally ingested Lavender essential oil may aid in both preparing for sleep and improving waking energy levels (7,8). While the mechanism of these benefits is not wholly understood, it is believed that it is at least partially due to its ability to influence neurotransmitter activity and have a general soothing effect on the nervous system (9).

Like Lavender essential oil, L-theanine can be found in a substance that has literally thousands of years of use for its health-benefitting properties. The counterpart to amino acids L-glutamate and L-glutamine, L-theanine is a constituent of green tea. Although green tea can be highly caffeinated, it doesn’t seem to have a stimulating effect, and research is beginning to demonstrate that this may be due to L-theanine. While most of the current research revolves around its “soothing” and stimulant-inhibiting effects when combined with caffeine, the research regarding its sleep-promoting benefits is growing. In clinical trials, L-theanine has shown the ability to help subjects stay asleep and get higher quality sleep. Use of L-theanine has been shown to improve both sleep efficiency and sleep latency (10,11). Though the underlying mechanisms aren’t yet totally understood, it is thought that the sleep-related benefits of L-theanine consumption are due to its ability to stabilize the glutamatergic concentration and alter levels of serotonin and other neurotransmitters in the brain (12,13). Like Lavender essential oil, when consumed, L-theanine influences neurotransmitter activity to encourage the development of better sleep hygiene and more effective rest.

the Real Food Factor

Stepping out of the trap of what others expect.

This is going to be a personal experience blog post – one that I believe in for the sake of transparency and authenticity. And, it’s about health improvement and weight loss and getting my head straight.

Today, I started by considering the things in life that I don’t want.

  • I don’t want to be a burden for others to have to care for as I age
  • I don’t want to watch my own self wither farther away because of depression and decisions that someone else made for me.
  • I don’t want to live a normal life.
  • I don’t want to keep eating foods (or ‘phoods’) that leave me wanting, empty, fat, and aging.
  • I don’t want migraines any more
  • I don’t want to be at an unhealthy BMI and weight any more.

And one of the main decisions, thanks to the concept being reiterated until I finally “get it,” is that I don’t care what works for other people – it does not work for me. And I am tired of trying to fit in. As Joshua Rosenthal said – there is a difference is fitting in and fitting out. Since I realize now that I don’t fit in very well, I’m really happy with fitting out. That means I get to choose.

Did you know you get to choose?

  • What you eat and when
  • What you wear and when
  • Where you go and what and when you do
  • What size your body is
  • How fit your body is
  • What you believe

And, it’s a journey. It’s movement one bit at a time and one moment at a time. One little, tiny decision, at a time.

I really appreciate what Louise L. Hay said, when she explained that:

“the only point of power you have is right now, in this moment. You can always resist something when you decide to do it.”

With all that said, I’m on a mission for me and it will be evolving. Maybe you wonder about complying with society’s demands, too.

But let’s be very clear: there is a health crisis all around us. There is a conspiracy to get us to eat more of the processed foods, animal-sourced foods, foods with chemicals and insecticides unlabeled, fast-food is cheap and vegetables are expensive. Why is this? Because your health is not worth much to Big Agriculture and those who make money off your choices and illnesses.

It’s entirely your choice, just as it’s mine. And it’s not an easy choice.

Sometimes you’ll be doing the Hokey-Pokey with one foot in and one foot out. But that’s fine. It’s the Hokey-Pokey that might make it okay one day for you to put both feet in, jump out, and jump back in. It’s a journey. One decision at a time.

For myself, I’m tired of it. Just simply tired of feeling tired.

Food Experiments and Innate Wisdom

Learning to trust is an important success in life.

If you are a client or patient of mine, you’ll know that we work toward developing a measure of introspection. The ability to look within requires a specific discipline to stay the course until you can learn to trust what’s inside, little by little. The way in is never the same for everyone, or even any two people, really.

Sometimes the work might be facilitated by Story, by Journal, by food experiments, or by practicing assertive  presence and communication skills in a safe setting. It takes a conversation to designate your very own path and interest, paired with your willingness and desire to see results.

What ever modality, or combination of modalities is chosen, the perseverence is what is important to arrive at a successful place. Success, here, is measured by your own assessment.

Because learning to trust one area of your life opens up your ability to trust your own innate wisdom in all of your life.

Money and Your Health, Pt. 3

After we’ve journaled and explored our relationship with money, we probably now have identified some fears and some concerns we have.

The final piece of exploring our money situation is developing the ability to look at our finances without judgment or a place of fear, but instead with love. Love. This means being able to tell ourselves the truth about our individual selves and money. Without fear or judgment. This ability to look at our relationship with money without fear and with love is an important step in becoming financially free.

When we make the decision to be loving and fearless, we are in a position to reclaim our power and view our finances differently:

  • First, we can be honest about our current financial state. This is where you assess how much debt you have, how much money earn, and how much you are spending. It’s important to be nonjudgemental, confident, calm and objective.

(Sharing my own experience, I would look at the concept of “income,” simple as it sounds. I would get stuck because my mind would bring up questions like, “what about taxes?;” “what about automatic deductions?” and I would give up before I started. Why? Because it was easier to stay stuck out of fear, than it was to look squarely at what the flow of money was. Was I judging money? No! I was judging my own self and condemning my own decisions and running the scripts that supported fear. Sound familiar? It’s okay. We can move past this when we decide to.)

  • Second, unburden yourself! Tell another person about your current finances. You can tell your story, maybe you would like to ask this person to just listen to you as you move through your process and develop confidence. By telling another person, you hear your own story, and you can see that your fears and hesitations really aren’t the end of the world. If you talk to a person skilled in reflective listening, you will be supported in your decisions and you’ll quickly develop your own strategy and have that gentle accountability, too.
  • It’s important to know that you have your own innate worth, and that money flow does not determine your worth. Money is not value, it’s a tool.

Journal time!

List some things that you value about your Self. All the big things and the small things you can think of. Read this list before you go to sleep at night. Add to it as new awareness of self-worth develops, as you will surely find them. Self-worth is a new concept and a new skill.

Through all these steps, I hope you found a few skills that help you to see that money is not you, and that you have innate worth. You have a vision of what things might be like if money was not a concern, and we looked at what a career that aligns with your dreams looks like.

Now that some clear goals and trends are identified, I hope you can aim your creativity, affirmations, and decisions to create your dream job that aligns with what you truly want and value.

Money & Your Health pt. 2

Part 2 of a 3 part series

Most of us that read about money have realized that money is the product of work! Whether we work for ourselves, in partnership with others, or as an employee, we understand that work is what we do.

But: here’s a question to think over:

Does the work that you do align with your passion or sense of purpose?

Not very many of us can answer this with an enthusiastic “YES!” but most of us feel like we’re pretty “okay” with our jobs.

So have you ever thought about what your work would be if it were soul-satisfying, and absolutely what you would do if money didn’t matter? Even if you don’t have your “dream” occupation, let’s take a few minutes to develop what that dream occupation would be. Then, we’ll have a set of skills and ideas for a couple of reasons, which we’ll get to at the end of the exercise.

Writing time!  Take a few minutes, maybe a half an hour total, get your journal that we worked on in part 1, and let’s do some creative writing again. We are going to brainstorm and capture what a dream job would look like. Write out your ideal and create your own “official” job description, job title, and all the details.

  • Title of Your Position
  • Description of What the Job Requirements are
  • Salary that you will have
  • What are your daily responsibilities and tasks
  • What requirements do you need – skills, education, qualifications?

First, now that you have an idea,  think about what responsibilities and tasks you can incorporate into your current position. This is one way of bringing your Joy into what you do, now.

Second, what skills do you think you should develop? Even while you are working maybe you can take some classes part time, research setting up a business, look for meet up groups that appeal to people who have the same interests, or other ideas that come to you.

Third,  are there some steps you can do right now to begin creating your reality? After your assessment of skills or steps needed in the paragraph above, think about things like going to look at office space (you don’t have to lease it just yet. of course!), find out how to get a business license, maybe decide if you’ll run your business online only for now, do you need a wholesale permit or a desk?

Now that you have some clarity around how your money comes in to you and that it’s possible to earn your living with Joy and Purpose, you can learn to bring love to what you do now, even if it isn’t what you would love to do later. And, you have some ideas to develop into your next business idea if you choose to do so!

EWG Dirty Dozen & Clean 15

Have you wondered about specific foods that are better to buy organic, and which ones are okay to buy conventional if you can’t always buy organic?

Basically, conventionally grown foods can have many unlabeled chemicals and pesticides used on them, some of which are in the food and can’t be washed of. Growing food without these chemicals and only using natural pest control methods without chemicals is called “organic,” and has to be proven to earn the U.S. Organical seal.

Download and use this handy guide on what’s best bought organic, and what’s okay because the chemical burden is pretty low. The important thing:

Money & Your Health

Part 1 of a 3 part series

Recently the “Karmic Flow of Money” was presented in an online health class I am taking. I would like to share some of the key points and my thoughts that go with those, through the lens of a Whole Person health practitioner.

I think we all know that our relationship with money can cause physical and emotional stress symptoms if that relationship is dysfunctional in any way, like we might see being in a relationship that doesn’t work well.

Key Strategy #1:  We expend energy for income.

Whether you have a job as an employee, or you are a creative artist, or you are self-employed; we exchange our life energy, psychic energy, or time for income. This is not “trading time for dollars” (or other currencies), this is an exchange of energy for energy. When we trade our best energies for a  monetary amount that feels “off” or is patently uneven we are aware of the disparity, but may not be aware of what that disparity represent. It’s important to do some internal assessment here to uncover some facts, beliefs, or patterns we might not know about.

  • When the exchange of energies is disparate, or unequal, we are intentionally (or, maybe unintentional through being unaware) creating a disparity in which we are most often the “loser” in the exchange inequality.
  • If the exchange isn’t equal, then the attempt for energies to balance (think back to basic chemistry and the covalent bonds where the negatively charged electrons are always seeking balance) will be ongoing with or without our awareness. This balance can be thought of as a form of “money karma” in modern language.
  • Talking about money, even to ourselves, is not a bad thing. When we don’t feel confident about our worth, or have an underlying feeling of undeservingness we don’t know about, we feel that our value is “less than” its worth, and we make our pricing for our “less than,” to confirm our thoughts or beliefs.
  • And yet: financial empowerment is what forms the basis for our security in being able to live, study, make our lives better, feed our families, and house ourselves. When our needs are met, we have a form of financial independence, without which we probably could not help others, be our best, or fulfil our place in the world.
  • Money does not make you better than anyone else, nor does the absence of it make you less than anyone else. It simply gives you choices, and gives you the opportunity to be heard in the world.
  • Money, as a concept, has a much broader meaning than what we might give it. Often, because we just worry if we have it or don’t have it.

Let’s make a start by looking at what money means to us. And, by doing this exercise, we’ll have something to refer back to when the next blog post (part 2 of 3) comes out. So, grab some paper or your journal and let’s get started:

On a blank piece of paper with plenty of room, write this down:

“When I live my life from a position of financial strength, I will….”

Now. You have presented yourself with a huge question. Your mind might immediately resist, or you might jump at the possibilities. That’s why you have room on your page to free-associate, ponder, connect some dots, look at patterns, or write your biggest imaginings or your worst fears.

In fact, every time you do this little exercise, you’ll come up with many more ideas and thoughts.

Here’s where you look for patterns over and over again. You may realize some things. Maybe the work you do doesn’t align with what you believe. Maybe you make too little money for what you realize is your life’s purpose and mission.

I’ll share some take-aways from my own experience, and I would love to read yours in the comments, too!

  1. I would never have to worry about paying my living expenses again.
  2. I would only work in my true life’s purpose: counseling and teaching. That means I wouldn’t have to have a job for “security.”
  3. I would live in a home that looks over the ocean in northwestern Washington State.
  4. I would spend my days writing and counseling.
  5. I would finally have the luxury of time to read my books, enjoy coffee and friends, and cogitate life in friendly coffee places – maybe one of which I own.

Personalized Health Support

  • This week, I found some deep truths that interrupted almost all of my personal beliefs about health, the assumptions I made, and I thought to share those for you so you can do some introspection, too.

First, I realized that you can become – and are empowered to become – that you can take responsibility for your own health and wellness goals and choices. Nobody has to do it for you, you don’t have to be dependent on anyone else to do things for you, make decisions for you, or own your outcomes. Do you have any goals in these areas?

  • Weight Management
  • Chronic condition self management skills
  • Sleep
  • Energy levels
  • Stress management skills
  • Food choices

You can invest in yourself and retain a personal support health coach who can say the following:

I’m here to help you explore and identify the goals and health outcomes you want, and I’m here to support wellness changes and help you to be responsible for your own decisions and attaining your own goals – in other words, you own the goal and the work.

We are in a time when, by and large, people are becoming more and more unhealthy. Not only is this because of the processed-food-system, but also because trustworthy health and food information is hidden from us and hard to find.

What if you could escape the tyranny of confusion about dieting and nutrition? Here’s a disconnect that is hidden from us: All that great nutrition information purportedly in diet books is designed to sell you books, make you feel good a little while, and then fall right back into your old habits. Why?

Because the diet industry counts on your not having an internal sense of control!

They want you get excited, buy a book, sign up for some MLM diet business, buy products, fail at that, and do it all again. They want you to:

  • not think for yourself,
  • not listen to your body’s wisdom,
  • ignore your own sense of internal validation and wisdom,
  • not make your own decisions based on what you know, and
  • keep buying their stuff.

Dietary theories, nutritional research and all the “ivory tower” stuff has very little to do with most people who live in a world of fast food, eating on the run, and existing on nutritionally depleted so-call “food,” that is tasteless and probably dangerous to your health.

Your story has power, and your willingness to open up and be heard is empowering.

Your story yields insights and truths you may not know exist.

Dialogue about living, frustrations, and what health outcomes, emotional sticking points, and getting things out in the open is the secret tool to disrupt the intellect and the media messages around you.

I always recommend an expertly facilitated conversation to get started on your own path where you say “yes” to what matters to you, and “goodbye” to the bulk of what you have been told by those who want to keep you as a life long financial “customer.”

What Is A Registered Nurse Health Advocate?

Having a health support ally that is expert in the human condition, navigating difficult health diagnoses, and having the practical and scientific expertise to pull together many facets that challenge areas of health in your own life is something that’s been largely unavailable until very recently. By combining the expertise of a Licensed Registered Nurse with the skill set of Health Coaching, a new expert is available to consult on many areas when health concerns present themselves.

You might find that having a Registered Nurse Health Advocates™ (RNHA)™ as your health coach partner can be beneficial and provide many unexpected benefits:

  • We understand that “health” encompasses emotional well being, healthy relationships, body health, spiritual health and welfare, living a balanced and happy life, moving your body, and making peace with health conditions.
  • We understand that not “healing” is not the same thing as being free from disease or pain.
  • We listen. We hear. We validate.
  • We do not judge. There’s no unsolicited advice. We support you and your journey.
  • We are Nurses. And, you are the very reason we are Nurses. We want to help. We want to support.
  • We can offer body therapies in some states.
  • We can help you make decisions that affect your lifestyle and health status.
